The guide for laboratory practices ''A Practical Course of Pharmacognosy'' (2011, 499 pages; authors V.O. Antonyuk, R.M. Lysyuk, L.Ya. Antonyuk)is prepared in accordance with the typical curriculum of Pharmacognosy, based on the principles of ECTS, for students of English medium at Higher Pharmacy Institutions and faculties of Pharmacy at Higher Educational Institutions.

Definitions of major pharmacognostic terms concern kinds of medicinal plant materials (MPM), methods of analysis, quality control and standardization of phytopharmaceuticals. The current techniques for analysis of herbal drugs in accordance with the European Pharmacopoeia are given within the correspondent chapters. Special chapters are dedicated to batch quality analysis, sampling, macroscopic and microscopic, microchemical analyses of plant materials, analysis of herbal collections (Species) and powdered materials; also Bibliography in Pharmacy and Pharmacognosy, the journals on Pharmacognosy, Pharmacological classification of medicinal plants.

Each chapter is provided by information for better preparation of students for practical training: actuality; learning objectives; a list of relevant literature; test and program questions; examples of tests; items for homework; the detailed characteristics of the objects of analysis (plant image, MPM definition, distribution, morphological and microscopic characters, constituents, pharmacological effects, medicinal application); comparative morphological characteristics of possible adulterants; methods of fulfillment of practical tasks.
For classes of biologically active natural compounds are given classification, physical and chemical properties, methods of extraction from MPM, detection, chromatographic methods of analysis, quantitative assays, major activities. They comprise polysaccharides and glycosides, fixed oils, vitamins, simple phenols and their derivatives, coumarins and chromones, flavonoids, tannins, anthraquinones, lignans, xanthones, iridoids, volatile oils (monoterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, aromatic compounds), triterpenoids and saponins, steroids, cardiac glycosides, alkaloids.
